caethua - queenly women crowned and uncrowned -abandon ship records – cass - 5$

Cold marriages of growing up in the snow covered cornfields of upstate New York, moldy nylon-stringed guitars, a hissing blend of flea market electronics, rusted pots and pans, field recordings of a doomed boat trip down the St. Lawrence River, birds in the ice covered trees, the groan of an overheating diesel engine, shortwave radio in the middle of nowhere, busted cars sliding in the sleet of Indiana, the soft hum of a dusty living room, bugs and reptiles singing from Florida swamps, and a sorrowful voice leading us into the frozen ground.

Recorded, written, produced and mixed by Clare Hubbard, featuring the accompanying sounds of Justin Clifford Rhody and friends. Queenly Women Crowned and Uncrowned is Caethua's 3rd release. A split LP of Caethua and Shep and Me will be coming soon, as well as a cassette release on Nightpeople Records. Caethua is also the alto saxophonist of Indiana free noise junk jazz band DBH and solo lyricist of disgusting rap project SPORTS. Visit www.saxwand.com, www.friendsandrelativesrecords.com, www.myspace.com/caethua, and www.bluesanct.com for other releases.

cahier orchestra – ciudad – phantom limb recordings - cdr - 6$

Marko of FInland has been making music for a long time (with releases on Foxglove,
Cut Hand and Sloow Tapes)  But he has never made a collection of sounds as brutal
and intense at this yet.

Phantom Limb is honored to release this truly epic set of sonic mayhem,
blasted rhythms and blurred soundscapes.  Glitched out bliss from across the sea!

cahier - jour ouvrable ii - foxglove - cdr - 8$

finland's marko neumann aka cahier returns with his second blast of warm air straight from the arctic. lilting drones that are conjured from a variety of sources, some electronic, some acoustic, dance like magical lights just out of reach, but close enough to feel. this sequel to cahier's first foxglove offering puts the puzzle pieces in place so that the listener can hear the full scope of his range. the short bursts are like chance meetings in the street; like a place of refuge from the cold. cahier's latest continues neumann's quest to touch the sun

cahier –höyryveturi – cut hands - cdr - 10$

Cahier is shaping up to be a grandmaster of contrast, dude’s got a thorough vision of how to soundtrack his growingly fucked up mind. This new joint collects some of his most extremely damaged psycho thoughts. Broken guitar amps singing through layers and layers of grey noise, piercing feedback symphonies which he actually manages to shape into melodic weirdo jams and a cold and wasted feeling throughout the whole thing. A fucked up fairytale for society’s lepers. We all know we’ll end up dead anyway. Edition of 50, black and white photo art, tragic.

cam deas - for the silver waters, sing! - blackest rainbow – cdr - 11$

Second CDR from Cam on BR... this time around Cam focuses on 12 string guitar compositions (kinda like a tribute to Robbie Basho) rather than the more far out folk drone of 'Five Bells' (also reissued this month!). The kid has got some sweet finger picking going on...  and at times almost has this kinda weird post folk aggro grunge twang to it, which I guess makes no sense, but check it out and you'll get me (maybe?). Closing track 'Raag Of The Sillver Waters' builds from the previous two 12 stringers, but Cam brings his own far out qualities to it with vocal drones, reverse looping, and bizarre bubbling bleeps. A definite for any fans of James Blackshaw, Robbie Basho... Edition of 98 hand numbered copies on pastel paper.
-br

c

cam deas - five bells - blackest rainbow – cdr - 11$

2nd edition with different artwork to the first run... The initial 2 seconds of the opener on this 6 track blazer from Cam are screeching electronics which vanish instantly into a seance of a doomed village, with the leader strumming out some bleak herbal drug folk ritual/haze.  Track two, 'Where We've Been' blurs into an intense dronescape, smearing into a lighter, more psychedelic, drone piece 'Where We're Going'. 'The Days Are Over' has a floating drone back, layered on top with guitar ala Jack Rose, Blackshaw etc. Title track 'Five Bells' follows burning the guitar into a flaming rage, with a few remaining strum yelps struggling through the flames. The disc closes with a sweet guitar piece entitled 'Two More Days', again similar to Blackshaw and Rose. Cam just moved up for the smoke to the steel city and a bunch of us just discovered his musical vibes. He has a bunch of things dropping soon, and had a split release with Sindre Bjerga not so long ago. The dude has the skills. Limited to 60.

can't - private time part 2 - weird forest - lp - 14$

For me this is the ultimate Can't LP. Its a sound cornucopia of everything Jessica Rylan does so beautifully... amazing scraped and destroyed analog synth-laden vocals, lovely singer/songwriter stylings with acoustic guitar, and Shaggs-style garage gusto! This record features Jessica's own homemade synthesizers including the Little Boy Blue! One of my favorite Weird Forest releases to date! Beautiful color covers by Abide Visuals and a fabulous inner sleeve with artwork by Jessica.

jefre cantu-ledesma - shining skull breath- students of decay – cdr –8$

"Shining Skull Breath" documents the latest solo recordings by Root
Strata label head and founding Tarentel member Jefre Cantu-Ledesma.
Those familiar with Jefre's recent solo outings, such as "The Garden
of Forking Paths" and"Floating Weeds," will recognize the stunning,
wistful, barely-there melodies which abound on those albums. However,
this  time around these slow orbits of somber, evocative tone are
submerged in boiling vats of molten fuzz and static making for an
increasingly dynamic and bewitching listen. This truly is brilliant, potent,
deep listening of the highest order.

capricorn wings - precenc - abandon ship records – cass - 5$

"The Capricorn Wings project is the same duo as Ghost Brâmes of the Cerf 's Florian Tositti and Jacob Garret from Angers, France. A different perception of style, where they play to construct similar sounds and to manipulate a dark atmosphere. In a little bit more acoustic/soft way, these two long improvisations were played during the latest procession of the duo in May 2007.

car commercials - judy's dust-cenotaph – lp – 21$

Judy’s Dust is the debut full-length LP by Car Commercials of New Brunswick, New Jersey. Here, the duo of David Sutton (Friends and Family, Current Amnesia, Ladderwoe) and Daniel DiMaggio (Home Blitz) expand on the rock/mumble strategies from the self-released Jar 7” (Leaf Leaf, 2006) and a couple cassettes kicked around the New Jersey underpasses. Contains twelve songs of missing spaces, too much Center Ice, drums and wires, varispeed recording techniques, and facing backwards – all from the other side of the E Street. Limited to 300 copies including 25 with handmade cover art.

e

eric carbonara - This May Be The End/Long Hallway, Three Slightly Open Doors - new american folk hero – 3" cdr – 7$

This May Be The End is a tapestry of intricately repeating guitar
phrases woven into layers of interlocking, syncopated, phase in/phase
out patterns...a melodic rhythm that will keep your head bobbing as
much as spinning. Melodic lines (often expressed through layered
ebows) enter as quickly as they depart, leaving no central theme
except the interlocking Reichian pattern. This may be the end feels
almost like two pieces of music with a bridge of synthesized waves
between the two patterns, the latter being a more subtle come down to
the vortex of chaotic bliss in the first section.

Long Hallway, Three Slightly Open Doors is a step in a different
direction, without a central rhythmic or melodic theme, the piece is a
beautifully meandering stumble of notes falling from the guitar. A
perfect counterpart to the first piece's tenseness, Long Hallway is
loose, patient and indirect about it's objectives, causing the
listener to react more than anticipate.
Recorded in his home studio, Nada Sound Studio, from 2003 to 2006,
both pieces are a far cry from Carbonara's solo guitar work, showing
his depth as an arranger/composer in the studio beyond that of a solo
improviser.

Epic follow-up/companion piece to the notably outstanding "Recalcitrants" Gods of Tundra LP, as well as possibly the final addition in the infamous WEIGHTED GHOST series; available for complete public consumption. and argueably, one of the best in the thick mystery series. oddly calls to mind some assorted Pierre Henry & Allan Bryant composistions. W.C. claims to record his works in various bedrooms; can only imagine how the colours must melt and the walls shake around him in resonance to his psychedelic madness. the carson man continues to shake minds and stir souls. edition of 88 hand-numbered copies.

tom carter & christian kiefer - a rather solemn promise - the great pop supplement - cd - 12.50$

"But what is revealed on tape from those few hours is simply remarkable: a
musical landscape that is intense, searching, and emotionally resonant in
ways that are unexpected and relevatory.

One of the two, Tom Carter, has spent his entire career in the world of
improvisational music, with his regular group Charalambides, as a solo
performer, and as a member of various other groups devoted to free
improvisation and psych-folk. The other, Christian Kiefer, is primarily
known for three releases on Australia’s legendary experimental music label,
Extreme, albums that waffle between folk-ambience soundscapes and
singer-songwriter material"

tom carter and shawn david mcmillen - legless mother and the spotted lamb vs the great american cocksucker bird - blackest rainbow – cassette - 9$

Collaboration between two awesome forces in psychedelic music and new weird America scenes, Tom Carter plays in Charalambides, and Texas based Shawn David McMillen played/plays in Ash Castles on the Ghost Coast and The Friday Group. This is out there, guitar pluckery, vocal insanity and field recordings... collaboration from way back in 1999. This is one of the strangest and surrealest Blackest Rainbow releases so far, solely for Side B's bursts of laughter with flowing water in the background... truly bizarre. Sleeve by McMillen, with handnumbered insert. Handnumbered edition of only 77 copies.

christina carter / pocahaunted - nnf - lp -12$

Been beautifully blissed on this pairing for months now and we’re amped it’s finally public unveiling time. Christina Carter has trekked around this country (and planet) countless times in the past decade plus, both by herself and with Tom Carter in Charalambides, and the constant gypsy-drifting has weathered her song-stories down into spare, spiral reflections on life, death, and afterlife. Here she lays down four perfect vignettes of acoustic guitar pattern, softly sung desperation, and dangerous intimacy. A beatific bring-down. Sisters-with-voices Pocahaunted handle the B side wax, and their two tracks span the psych-ward spectrum from doomy warpath exile (“Sweat Lodge”) to octave-climbing estrogen ecstasy cloud-tripping (“Silk Fog Traveler”). Both were recorded by Bobb Bruno at Eagle Rock HQ across summer ’07 and cling like cotton to the memory banks. Edition of 500.

Another upstate New York free-form group (must be something in the water?), Century Plants' two members hail from
Albany and lay down some heavily crazed guitar action on this release (their second one).  Featuring members of
Burnt Hills, Century Plants have crafted a diverse world out of just three tracks, showing a complexity only outweighed
by the passion that created it.

c

century plants - without mercury - abandon ship records – cass - 5$

Taking time off from their psych guitar strangling duties in Burnt Hills, Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare's Century Plants offer their 5th release, a near hour of Zen space, drone, noise and drift.

"In every CP release, the room is the organizing instrument. This is no exception as the clicks, hums, bumps, shuffles, and scrapes of the CP bunker echo the textural guitar passages, industrial clang and FX loop and skreech. A more meditative and psychedelic excursion than previous releases, this is a HEAVY exploratory trip, perfect for maximum zone-out.", how would it sound? Probably a lot like this release-- gritty, droney, and mysterious."
- Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare

c

century plants – bloodrise - peasant magik - 3" cdr -5$

Howling monolithic massive live set from this explosive duo. Nightmarish fog cutter sonics ebb and throb with a dark sinister undertow... unlike anything else you’ve heard from them. This one documents them opening for Dead Machines in summer 07. Molten lava inspiration was flowing down into the basement that night, and the proof is right here. Total power focus. Echoes of Robedoor, Throbbing Gristle, Birchville Cat Motel, and countless other sonic terrorists can be heard, but Century Plants stir things up into their own unique brand of madness. The 3" cdr is painted black and wrapped in a foldout sleeve held. 3" CDR Edition of 100

century plants - inversions ikuisuus – cdr -  10$

Latest from Albany guitar duo whose six string damaging has often shred the guitar beyond recognition. For this outing, however, Century Plants plug in, and allow their guitars to be guitars. Psych raga, melting icebergs of roaring drone, metallic strum and clang, oceanic melody and even a helping of pastoral song melody separate this from previous smash ups. Hardiman and Hare create these hypnotic states from the ground up, building their sound out of pure improvisation. Oh yeah, the guitars don't always sound like guitars!

ceylon mange - the maiming path - hp cycle – lp -$15

Ceylon Mange is the trio of Dylan Nyoukis (Chocolate Monk proprietor and sound molder in Blood Stereo, Decaer Pinga), Karen Constance (Blood Stereo, Smack Music 7) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt). The Maiming Path extends from the group's previous mind melts with two side long (de)constructions that are assembled from a variety of mangled loops and electronics, guitar feedback/slaughter and cromagnon vocals. The results are a murky stew, as each emerging sound creeps upon the listener like a blackened sloth nightmare. It's the type of organic brain tangle that is rarely unleashed by the spirits these days. The LP is pressed in an edition of 650 and housed in a full-colour printed sleeve featuring Karen's outsider artwork.

A pair of blurry, beautiful guitar meditations that tread water in the sky, rippling with murmurs and weird waves, cycling through a lost, narcoleptic wash of reverb atmospherics and mirage vibrations. A slow-motion migration from new age depths to ancient heights. Let go. Pro-manufactured aqua cassettes with seaweed-green shell art in a Tatum-designed J-card. Hand-numbered edition of 200.

this supergroup of sorts recorded this, their first album, in october of 2005 in portland, oregon. consisting of mike tamburo, matt mcdowell, and world's honey owens and adam forkner. the results are monolithic. two sprawling jams that illuminate the night sky with their own vivid lightshow. these massive drones are dense and subtle, with each hypnotic change commanding the listener's full attention. on their own, each of these artists are major league talents, but put them in a room together and they're a different monster. just one listen to chaob and you'll feel the electricity in the air.

cherry blossoms – s/t –black velvet fuckere* - lp -11$out of stock

"At long last, here is the debut LP from The Cherry Blossoms, who describe themselves as "Middle-Tennessee's finest anarchic post neo-skiffle collective specializing in kazoo-exotica." They are the musical heirs of Dock Boggs' visceral holler; they share the true gut-sung honesty of Bosavi guitar band music; they are a Dixie-fried Arkestra with out-of-tune acoustic guitars replacing every saxophone and a kazoo in place of Sun Ra's mellotron. This LP finally brings to proper format their most celebrated and celebratory songs, from interstellar boogie ("Rockin' Rocket Ship") to agitational architectural conservation anthem ("Golden Windows"), The Cherry Blossoms offer the OTHER Nashville Sound, the one that a multi-million dollar industry and a million pairs of snakeskin boots will never notice and can never corrupt. With only handmade releases and limited touring, the band has made fans and friends of the likes of Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance), Will Oldham, Josephine Foster, and David Tibet (Current 93). That's an extremely short list – few who have heard the songs and voices of Peggy Snow, John Allingham, and the legion other Cherry Blossoms past and present have been immune to the contagious sound of the most honest band in America."

Christian Family Underground - for the depth of your union… - woodsist - lp -14$

Summer 06 Family Underground (DK) recorded with Dave Nuss of NNCK at
Black Dirt Studios in the woods of upstate NY.  The yield was as
characteristically unhinged as one might expect:  sweeping electronic
sounds backed with wood and bone percussion spirit-conjure.  However
also harvested was some new and especially tasty crop: sung and spoken
song, electric guitar/conga “rock,” and an odd ghostly sheen coating
the entire proceeding.  Nuss comments on the session: “I remember when
we were recording, momentarily leaving the studio and going out into
the night and feeling it thicken like a partition separating us from
this intense state of clear consciousness we had in the recording,
which was like… humankind’s natural state.  And then thinking about
Jesper from FU, an adopted Vietnamese living in DK, and how much he
resembles Michael Jackson, and realizing that across continents no man
can be divided from himself.  We had to make this music to provide for
us some fantasy of fulfillment that would carry us through the weekend
like rejuvenated suns born again climbing to heaven, after being washed
in the deepest bluest sea….”  Jacket by designer Susan Cianciolo and
screened inserts by Stellar, NL.

the circle and the point - and so on forever - house of alchemy – cdr – 9$

Post-Terrastock 6, two weary travelers holed up in a spare bedroom with a random cache of instruments and various noisemakers in an attempt to unleash some of the beer-fueled steam that had built up over the previous weekend. The music here comes from two delirious afternoons, still weary from a lack of sleep, minds still overloaded from a weekend of mania- both music related and beyond. Floating acoustic guitars buried in the murk of distorted electric guitars. Featuring Grant Capes from (VxPxC), these are ideas six years in the making, now just starting to unwind.  Adorned with major cover art by Darryl Norsen.

The first morc 12" brings you the finest recordings by both zent one and circle brothers yet. it is a split release with the italian label almost halloween.

Zent one brings their sound very close to perfection: better melodies, a tighter songs, a more coherent collection of songs, all with piano and guitar, and one has a beautiful vocal part as well.  The proof that zent one is a very talented band.

Circle brothers is also a lot tighter than on the previous output. songs are more controlled than ever, which results in a sound more leaning towards roy montgommery.

claudio two – sniper at the gates of dawn - self –cdr – 10$

Some folks may claim that improvisation is all about LISTENING, but Claudio Two – a new project starring partners Chazz Improv and Norma Bates (aka James and Jessica Toth, formerly of WWVV), and featuring the first appearance in over ten years by former Golden Calves vocalist Max “Mev” Wicker – is all about the opposite. Recorded in various spurts over the fall of 2007, Sniper at the Gates of Dawn is the debut CDR by Claudio Two, on which the band layers individual single tracks recorded solo and combines them unheard (a la Durian Durian), and, elsewhere, uses this source material to try to recreate this accidental music while in a group setting. Mixed in glorious mono. 150 copies, no reissues. $10

Brand new dead end carpetbagger blues by these born losers. This third Claudio Two album (following the unreleased and indefinitely shelved Jazz Improve CDR) finds the crew flexing their muscles a bit - from wasted bedroom metal riffs carelessly layered over each other to create a zit cream vortex, to synth / occult pieces inspired by John Carpenter soundtracks and Ritalin snorting, to atmospheric black metal frightmares, and decrepid blooz rock, it's all here on this brief CD, which may or may not include the band's first actual cover song, by French geniuses Vietnam Veterans. cloudland canyon / mythical beast - split - nnf - 12" -  12$

This fair pairing has been in the wings for a few years now by our count, but tripped things come to those who wait, so better late-as-shit than never. Cloudland Canyon have been spanning geographies (Brooklyn, Germany, Memphis) and genres (krautrock, drone, psych-pop) since at least 2002, but only recently has their technological studio-sorcery began to gather steam and affect the more far-flung populations (powered in no small part by their partnership with Kranky Records). Anyone who's gotten lost in CC's latest, Lie In Light, knows this duo is currently at the pinnacle of their potency, and their offering here ("Harvest Hunt") is a fantastic mechanical motorik ascent into symphonic hypnosis. Comparisons to classic Teutonic psych outfits of yesteryear are warranted but inadequate: this is music of today, for tomorrow. On the flip, beloved Not Not Fun in-laws Mythical Beast return to the vinyl spotlight with two luminous soul meditations conjured during the past winter's grey maze of days. Both ballads burn with Corinne's voice-for-the-voiceless defiance, wind-draped and incensed by Jeremiah and Aaron's subtle electric string energies. Naked music for open spaces, empty skies, endless nights. High-audio 45 RPM LPs (NNF's first!) in matte-jackets with cloud-skull artwork by Blackblack beauty Diva Dompe. Edition of 415.

coal hook - s/t - there is no trouble in denmark – cd - 12.50$

a bi-continental, willing-to-travel duo hailing from somewhere close to the eye of the storm with news from beyond instant satisfaction.

in the heat of copenhagen’s post-millennium christiania, ron schneiderman (sunburned hand of the man, aethr myth’d et al) and experimental madman & truth-teller jørgen teller (… & the empty stairs) discovered the vibe for coal hook during a one-time performance in december, 2006, with causa sui under the moniker pewt’r jjjjj.

the famed venue byens lys and it’s fire-heated wood-house cult-ambience went straight into the blood of this new being. from there the duo met at teller’s city studio a couple of days later for this session of blistering music that proved there was a newly formed bond merely at it’s inauguration. the course has been set for this string to be untied and the story to be opened.

the music of coal hook has all the nerve of today’s free rock movement at hands. both contributors have long lasting relationships with the music of free spirits in both improv, alt rock, psychedelica, dub, noise and folk music.

coal hook’s autonymous debut offers glances into dark places of insane beauty lighted by flashes of white sonic bolts spewed from two guitars’ glowing strings. odds are thurston moore will like this.

turner cody - buds of may - digitalis arts and crafts - cd -12$

‘Buds of May’ was originally self-released on cdr back in 2004 but has now been lovingly re-mastered and re-packaged by Digitalis so those of you who didn’t manage to track down the original issue will finally get to hear this exemplary work. Turner Cody may not yet be a name familiar to many, but thanks to extensive touring of the US and Europe he is causing quite a stir on the underground. Indeed the Herman Dune bassist was spotted by none other than Wooden Wand himself James Toth (who has recently signed to the Nonesuch imprint) who proceeded to bag a full LP for his own Mad Monk imprint. With this buzz around him it comes as perfect timing that Digitalis launch ‘Buds of May’, an album which in many ways is Cody’s most complete and most accessible.

Taking influence from the world of classic singer songwriters, from Bob Dylan to Townes Van Zandt with maybe a little of Will Oldham thrown in for good measure, Cody proceeds over the course of the epic ‘Buds of May’ to vocalize his own views on life. He is firstly a storyteller, and in a world where mainstream lyrical content is more banal than it has ever been, Cody comes as a breath of fresh air. Simply produced with guitar and bass underpinning the tracks, it is Cody’s distinctive singing voice which carries each piece as he creates distinctive melodies that stay with you for some time after the record has reached a close. Right now with artists such as Jose Gonzales haunting the mainstream airwaves it seems almost impossible not to stumble across new singer-songwriters whenever you flick through the racks of a high street store, but what Turner Cody offers is a unique voice in a crowd of copyists. Cody is at once cynical and hopeful and should offer an antidote to a tired, apathetic world. Unforgettable music

Cold Turkey is a altar ego for Michigan's Andrew Coltrane, who's had a stack of stuff coming out on labels like Sound Holes, John Olson of Wolf Eyes American Tapes, and his own killer Hemitage Tapes print, he's a fine as fuck example of the noise leaking from that part of the US. Searing sludge electronics and tapes, minimal bleep moments leading into junk jazz sax spillage. concern - s/t - students of decay – cdr –8$

This self-titled release is the debut by Concern, a
solo endeavor by Gordon Ashworth, who is perhaps
best known for issuing complex harsh noise missives
as Oscillating Innards. That said, Concern is an entirely
different affair. Here, Ashworth's principal focus is on
the drone - shimmering, multi-layered and dynamic,
he stretches loooong tones into gorgeous sonic tendrils
which dissolve or implode into impossibly nostalgic
field recordings and static. Recorded throughout the
years 2004 - 2007 and, surely, not to be missed.

cones –ice skating elephants– ikuisuus – cdr -  10$

Cones features Marcel Turkowsky and Ulf Schutte both members of Datashock and involved in other projects/labels like Aosuke, Tapetektoniks, UUHUU, Hui Tales Collection, Leo Mars and more. Their "Iceskating Elephants" shows four different cosmic soundtravels taken from their March Recording Sessions. When they are not parading into burlesque musicalia of beautyful underwater storiedrones read in muddy submarines floating to Kurosawa´s spiderwebcastle, they are visiting more concrete places like walking along howling swamps and forestlike playgrounds. And at the end we are still iceskating with Elephants on floating morellas to achieve a new freedom. Their Debut for Ikuisuus. In the mix: Contact Mics, Tapeloops and Goes, Memorytapes, Fieldrecordings and Electronics.

cones - die zacken - insult recordings - 3" cdr - 8$

"Die Zacken" documents a live performance by Marcel Turkowsky and Ulf Schutte as Cones. The last show on their European Tour with the collective Datashock which they are part of. The show happened to be in the legendary Zakk Club Bremen in the north of Germany. Marcel Turkowsky focusing on the use of his personal memory tapes played in prepared walkmen. He blends layers of fieldrecordings from broken icelakes and attack and tone tapesignals as he calls them and transforms it into a vibrante soundsculpture. Joined by Ulf Schuttes pulsating feedbacksystem it becomes a 20min piece in duration. It might recall the experience of a heavy walk through an harsh icestorm along with elephantines or horncreatures - howling and rumbling around your frozen summer ears. Cones are recapturing a hazy, time worn memory and you might have the feeling the recording machine emotionally plays along. Recorded straight to the Turkowsky Tape Recorder. Music removed from prescribed aesthetics that floods you with the beauty of life its ambivalence . A hallucinatory trip. Moore Kegel.

Total duo action going on with this release, Sophie and Kelly kick out some epic intricate folky guitar action as Cooper Jones, and on the flip side Patrick and Pascal break on some sprawling percussion and drum storms as Cars. Lots of movement here, this is a long document, capturing the flow of what these two groups do. Silkscreened artwork by Ryan Garbage.

Tulsa, Oklahoma is probably one place you would not expect to find a bouzouki or a person who can play one. But thankfully for the spirit of international culture, husband and wife team Brad and Eden Rose live in that very city. They make music under many names (most notably the North Sea but also Wax Ghost, Golden Oaks, and Agilvsga), and with many friends (from Michael Donnelly of Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood to Robert Horton (as Eastern Fox Squirrels)), but Corsican Paintbrush is purely their creation, their musical offspring. Combining lush instrumentation with clattering percussion and ramshackle beats, Corsican Paintbrush creates a new world of sound out of old world technology.

"Pre-dawn bedroom synthesizer and guitar compositions from a North Carolina ex-pat currently exiled to Central Michigan. Imaginary Scores never stagnates in effortless emotionalism; instead melancholy passages trace the horizon for glints of hope, seeking resolution and solace. While these pieces were not created with the intent to function together as a cohesive album, when paired together in this manner, I found that they illuminate an ethereal, radiant quality for which I always strive."

crystal stilts – s/t – woodsist – cd – 10$

Crystal Stilts started in Brooklyn in 2003 as Brad Hargett and JB Townsend. Not really trying to be a "band" they recorded and self-released their single "Shattered Shine" on their Feathery Tongue label in '04 with friend Sean Mafucci (producer of Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills, Kid Congo Powers etc.) With no shortage of lazy Jesus and Mary Chain and Factory records comparisons, (more like VU, Felt, and Blue Orchids) in 2005-06 they continued to play in New York with bands such as the Long Blondes, 1990s and The Monochrome Set and recorded a 4 song ep. Kyle Forrester (Ladybug Transistor etc. etc.) joined them at gigs playing organ as well. After a brief hiatus to record there back catalogue for upcoming LP (Slumberland) they adopted Andy Adler (who played bass on Eric Copeland of Black Dice fuzzpop outfit Ninjas) to rock the bass. After opening for the Clean in November, Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls) waltzed into their life to play the stand-up drums and complete the equation.

Brand new split LP featuring heavy hitting UK bleak dudes... A-Side is Jazzfinger's 'Killed In A Clear Sky', one solid slab of fucked up tapped guitar drone and distant errie whir... like a storm of electric feedback, slashes and cuts. Far out, and a real killer 20 odd minutes to make you lull out. B-Side is a collaboration between Culver and Fordell Research Unit, another side long piece, that starts off with some bassed up doom chugs and slogs that sound like fucking something that could lay down by some Southern Lord brutality, but then it punches you in the face with its distorted churning hell. cursillistas - wasp stings the last bitter flavor - digitalis recordings - cd - 12$

"Wasp Stings the Last Bitter Flavor" marks the first widely available release from this Portland, Maine troubadour. The brains behind the project is Matt Lajoie and he is perhaps best known for his enchanted album on Time-Lag Records. His folk-inspired psychedelia reaches new heights on "Wasp Stings" as he puts together an album of lost songs, found hiding in a dank and dusty cellar. Lajoie's approach here is different. It's as if he's taken the negative space of his previous works and hashed them out and spruced them up until they've become epic, flowing songs whitewashed with a basketfull of analog hiss. The whole thing flows together like magic poured straight from the sky. It's haunting, beautiful music.

Cursillistas' music is often densely populated with a variety of instrumentation and textures. Lajoie is a master at molding sounds from a variety of sources into a cohesive, organic whole. This music, as with past efforts, sounds like an intimate secret whispered in the listener's ear. You feel as though you're being led into a world where very few lucky souls find their way. Lajoie's distinctive voice is the true weapon here, weaving hypnotic melodies over rivers of delicately strummed acoustic guitars. "Wasp Stings the Last Bitter Flavor" is his message in a bottle. It's a love letter to everyone and no one, and there's a lot to love here, that is for damn sure.
Lajoie is joined by the inimitable Nemo Bidstrup (Time-lag Records figurehead and the brains behind Drona Parva) and sometime-MV & EE collaborator, Sparrow Wildchild.
Housed in sturdy, white-on-black gatefold jackets.

Seeking refuge in songcraft, D. Charles Speer and the Helix spin tales of mental instability and institutional exploitation into a thick, heady, groove laden brew. This is an unholy mix of heart ripped vocal, Longhair piano, and guitar work drawing from both Mike Bloomfield and Norman Westberg. datashock - vol iv - textile - lp -17$

There is no constant line-up, as the group is joined by new members every now and then.
Their music is defined almost entirely by psychedelic multidimensional live-improvisations stemming from 70ies Kraut-rock influenced by contemporary electronic music and psychotic dronescapes. As a result we find complex layers of sultry muffled vibrations met by heavy waves of electronic sound experiments and strangely disfigured images. Here and there reality-distorting bits of whispers and cut-up voices are woven into the texture of these alien patterns of sound. Every step here is like nervously stumbling through the swampy ground of a jungle. Here every look is like a secret glimpse at a hidden ghost-train world.
If, however, you would want to use other bands from past and present as a reference, names like Tangerine Dream or Sunburned might come to mind. Datashock’s music has a similarly warm and organic feel to it. Labels like ‘spooky Psychedelic-Post-Krautfolk’ are at the same time graphic description as well as missing the point altogether.
During the band’s four-year history one of the highlights has been this year’s (2007) release of a live-collaboration picture-LP with Nadja, also known as Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff.

Two years of end-of-winter recordings from Germany's greatest electronic commune, Datashock. A dreary 2006 produced the A-side, a cabin-feverish piece of ascending space shimmers, suffocating fog, and anxious percussion, punctuated by a brisk, paranoid coda. Psychedelic candied death. B-side was born the following year and finds our friends lost in a funhouse of echo and delay. A macabre carnival made groaning radio ghost. No faces in the mirror. Now it's 2008 and spring has sprung for Datashock, bringing forth this c48 along with LPs on Qbico and Textile. “Devillock is Justin Chris Meyers on organ, tapes and electronics. He also runs the Tone Filth label and also plays as Panther Skull. 'These Graves' is his debut on a real CD, but he has released handmade tapes and CDRs. He offers four tracks of densely layered sound, knitting all the sounds he can find together. Slowing down old reel to reel tapes on the title track provide another dark gesture in this music. Devillock doesn't play harsh noise as such, but he provides a pretty noise related drone sound. Minimal piercing sounds, mainly the lower region of the sound spectrum, making this quite a menacing affair. Noise as it's supposed to be: menacing, not by the harshness of it's sound, but by the content of what its sound has to offer. Despite it's title and bandname, I think it's a much more serious affair than the average noise attack. Great stuff.” – Frans DeWard, Vital Weekly No. 494

The first time I saw these two play I was sitting, totally sober, in the back of a warehouse in Purchase, NY. Maybe it was the hours of Simpson's arcade game I had just finished, but it was one of the most focused and engaging shows I had seen in ages. Later that night I approached MIR about working together, and 9 month later this finally sees the light of day. Both Diaphragm and Migrations In Rust contribute one slow burner each, with a collaborative track to finish things off. Somewhere between the space of Andrew Chalk, layers of Birchville Cat Motel, and the sinister atmosphere of Abruptum.

dig that body up, it's alive - a corpse is forever - rock is hell records - lp - 18$

John Dwyer (Oh Sees aka OCS, Pink & Brown, Coachwhips,...) + Oran Canfield (Child Abuse) + Nate Denver (Total Shutdown, Nate Denver's Neck).
DTB... IA! existed for less than a year. Tthe band was formed in San Francisco by JOHN DWYER (guitar) and ORAN CANFIELD (drums). they played about three shows before i joined as the singer. we played ferocious death metal for a few months and then the band went to sleep, forever. our record was supposed to be released by tUMULt records, but it never came out. i need to ask andee about that, i'm not sure why didn't come out. oran played on a small jazz drum kit and john played guitar through a gigantic bass cabinet and a guitar amp. the shows were deafening and i wore ear plugs so i'd be able to sleep after shows and practice. john and oran's musicianship was incredible, creative and fun to listen to. we had a great time in this band, and even though practices were plagued by arguments, afterwards we'd almost always ride our bikes a few blocks together, in good spirits, before parting ways to retire to our loving homes.

directing hand - songs for the red house - singing knives – lp - 27$

Brand new, William Morris inspired, lp called 'Songs From The Red House' out now. Four live songs and two studio songs with full colour artwork by Lavinia Blackwall.
Directing Hand began as a corollary to drummer/vocalist Alex Neilson’s growing interest in the original folk music of the British Isles. Initially, the group was set to amplify the early experiments in form that he had undertaken as a founding member of the Scatter ensemble. But as the project grew, the connection between earlier modes and current praxis became increasingly circuitous, with Neilson joining the dots between seemingly mutually-aggressive musical strands such as dilated big-band improvisation ala Globe Unity Orchestra and Taj Mahal Travellers, the fractured experiments in time of The Shaggs and Henry Flynt & The Insurrectionists and the spontaneous vocal energies of Patty Waters and Charlie Feathers.

The current Directing Hand line-up – consisting of Vinnie Blackwall on improvised vocals, cello, harp and harmonium and Neilson on drums and psaltry – represents the group’s starkest incarnation to date.

Blackwall is a classically trained vocalist, though she rarely makes a move that could be associated with any particular school. Sure, there are moments of tongue pressure that orbit the art trance of early Meredith Monk or Julie Tippett’s work with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble circa One Two Albert Ayler but there’s also a ton of mystery in the way that she seems to incorporate snatches of mellifluous choral and early music melodies in between full-body soundings and vegetable wordage. When you first catch it, it’s as shocking as an Australian in cut-offs, but as you surrender your brain to the glorious see-sawing command with which she pilots the furthest vectors of her body into sound, it seems to have the same connection to free jazz as the divine madrigal stylings of Dolly Collins on Anthems In Eden and Love, Death & The Lady had to the triumphal melodies of the Albert Ayler Orchestra.

Neilson’s playing detonates time by exploding any notion of accompaniment, response or precognition in favour of a profound simultaneity. Drummers have always been the revolutionary agents of musical change; switch up the beat and you reconfigure time, reconfigure time and you re-draw reality. In Neilson’s playing there is truly no past or future, simply Now over and over. Just one movement of his hands and then the next. And in a historical/cultural moment as oppressively 4/4 as 2008, it feels like a fucking revolution.

Just as the traditional readings are illuminated by the advanced application of vanguard, modernist aesthetics, the improvisations feel intuitively authentic and deeply volk-ish. For a tradition to go on living, sometimes it is necessary to kill it off completely. So, Directing Hand. On your knees, sir.

charlie draheim - possession -tone filth -lp -14$

"Pressure. Steam. Scrapyard drainage, leaking into the corners. Mold and mildew - seepage. Cracks, crevices containing black days and red nights. The infection is spreading. False and forgotten. The Butcher, as he's known amongst friends and enemies, slices his way though flesh and bone on his first vinyl appearance and his finest moment to date. Contaminating the a-side with sick tones, nauseating hiss and whine, the rumble and wet sadism of clogged sinuses led to climax in an orgy of rotten magnetic tape. Mongrel howls and junkyard threats make up the unhealthy flip of this record - the slowest of rhythmic thump wrought in contrast to relentless clang reminding of the new, no, The OLD Blockaders. It ends the second you wake up. Throw your vacant body in the gutter."

ele loe - sulas mino - peippo – cdr – 10$

The record Sulas mino was born on a big island, in a mint green house surrounded by an old garden. The recordings made in the autumn bliss of 2007 and in he warm winter of 2008 have been condensed to the debut album of Ele Loe. It begins with a soft, organic song where dreamy vocals are searching for the listener. Nevertheless, the acoustic feeling of the records first half turns into an electronic bustle where the music runs around the nearest solar system, tries to be space sand and continues its journey as psychologically tense artpop. Sulas mino seeks, experiments and tries to comfort. It’s a combination of ethereal melodies and abstract lyrics.

Ele Loe is a project of Kaisa Nieminen. In addition to the music she makes videos and pictures. She lives in an old farm in the archipelago, a little bit aside, but more than anything she loves the fact of living in the middle of clean nature.

elektronavn – songs of impermanence – ikuisuus – cdr -  10$

"More instrumental goodness dripping inwardly from the Danes, specifically Elektronavn who is Magnus Olsen Majmon, one of my personal favourite CDR-releasing, one-man band, geniuses of the drone, and a fellow who also has a convincing line in subtle electro-acoustic juxtapositions. While I’m still waiting to hear anything that delivers the depth and atmospheric richness of his 2004 CDR Rationale Mystique, this newie SongsofImpermanence (EMPTY SOUNDS REC ESR 008) promises a profound meditation on the great imponderables such as death, futility, loss and despair. Besides playing a ton and a half of reed instruments, strings, percussion and keyboards, Magnus also sings on this short half-hour record - a new side to his accomplishments with which I am yet to familiarise myself. Opening seconds alone were enough to persuade me he’s created a brace of gold-lined azure-enriched canvases in sound, fit to illuminate the darkest corners of these mighty abstractions of human misery that are his chosen themes. Hand-made cover has been produced using a raw, primitive version of the ‘decalcomania’ method, which in the hands of Max Ernst was used to create gigantic forests of post-war, angst-drenched doubt and lip-biting despair. In hands of Majmon, same technique produces little more than shapeless green blobs. No matter, because even if his painterly talents are slight, his musical gifts are beyond cavil."

EMERALDS is Mark McGuire, John Elliott & Steve Hauschildt. They are currently based in and around Cleveland, Ohio. Direct descendants of the history of adventurous punk, post-punk, whatever music spilling out of Ohio the last 35 years or so from Pere Ubu, Devo, Rocket From The Tombs, The Raspberries, The Cramps, Dead Boys, Great Plains, Fuzzhead, et al. EMERALDS is the sound of exploration of space/time conundrums utilizing vintage synthesizer beauty and guitar experimentation. Unfolding sweet-leaf shifts and gorgeous curves of kosmiche abandon are played with devotion and desire. With a palpitating discography of cassettes, cdrs etc both self-released and on righteous labels (Hanson, Gods Of Tundra, American Tapes, Chondritic Sound) EMERALDS have already distinguished themselves as new yet timeless, young yet ageless.

TUSCO TERROR was introduced to us by fellow Ohioan (at that time) Leslie Keffer, (who’s Feels Like Frenching LP we released last year) as her favorite band in Ohio. She sent us some cassette releases and we were immediately blitzed. The sound of reckless confrontation, living room shambles, chaotic slipstreams and glorious friendship noise crackled from one brain stem to another. TUSCO TERROR resides in Akron, OH when they’re not wheeling around the country setting up in any bewildered basement scene or delirious donut shop across the USA to wig out anyone fortunate enuff to be “there”.
