Painting petals on ghost planet - s/t - time lag records - lp - 24$

debut recording from italy 's opalio brothers (my cat is an alien) and ramona ponzini. an esoteric and mesmerizing trip through space, minimalism, and emotion. each track recorded at a different mystical location in the western alps, and centered around ramona 's beautiful vocals, all of which are sung in traditional japanese. maurizio & roberto add sparse accompaniment by means of toy piano, alien keyboard tones, antique accordion, percussion, tape effects, and some particularly evocative acoustic guitar. the whole thing comes off alternately as deeply meditative or chillingly haunted, depending on your attention & mood. silence, space & ritual are hugely important here, with notes & words hovering frozen in time... while the my cat is alien moniker might leave some folks scratching their heads, here the painting petals on plant ghost name nails it : fragile, beautiful, cosmically isolationist, and totally spooked... pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl, and lushly packaged with letterpress printed cover & insert. printed with copper ink on exquisite & massively thick handmade ivory art paper, each sheet cast one at a time & air dried. hand numbered edition of 560 copies.

palamaitoa - puuteriaika - labelle dame sans merci - cdr - 9$

method-olo-gical un-controlled collages of lo-fi-folk and melancholic handmade party for this admirators of marguerite duras - clap your hand and don't say yeah. burning chants, toys, piano & violin troubles - acoustics percussions that gives a floating sound and help the rest to result to a graphic/caustic music with elect - ro/nic & acoustic(s) manipulations and aero-hip - notic/tonic destination - words by ville moskiitto : "palamaitoa kuvaa musiikkiaan oikeastaan paremmin kuin itse osaisinkaan. "puuteriaika", "pienet muusikot", "jännittävä matka", "kaihoissa tyvenyys". nämä nimet kertovat paljon ja samalla eivät tietenkään yhtään mitään, ainakaan niille jotka eivät ole sitä musiikkia kuulleet. se on tuttua ja tuntematonta. akustisia ja elektronisia instrumentteja, improvisaatiota, sekamelskaa, tyyntä, sen sellaista. onhan näitä kuultu, voisi sanoa, mutta ihan omanlaiseltaan tämä kuulostaa. vaski-introsta akkarin rämpyttelyyn, "jännittävä matka" on pop-entropiaa. levyn jonkinlainen pääteos, 20-minuuttinen "vaippa", on koko matkansa ajan kiinnostava äänimaisema ja jo sellaisenaan, ihan yksinään olisi julkaisun arvoinen. kaikki hajoaa ja sitten pitää taas koota palaset yhteen."

panopticon eyelids - glitter vomit -abandon ship records – cass - 5$

Glitter Vomit was recorded on Mini-Disc at The Pines during the phantom power sabotage incident, winter 2007. The Alien Altars (rival gang) hijacked the sessions, stole our booze and beanies, drugged us and forced us at gunpoint to sonically wear boogie boots and glitter pants. Unphased and deep-zoned, we ripped through their inspirational cue cards like "Thin Testicles", "Free Boogie, White Boy" and "Fuck You! No! Not You! You! - Fela Kuti"... They kidnapped our bassist that night, too!

panther modern - salem -at war with false noise – cdr – 6$

First release (hopefully of many!) by this amazing new band from the US. I got this through the door one day a few months ago and was utterly blown away by how totally powerful and blistering it was. Three tracks of completely bleak, unrelenting and totally innovative harsh black noise! There are some terrific moments of tension as everything boils down to a low simmer, before once again the high- end kicks in and pummels yer napper into submission. There's a rather ambiguous Satanic theme running through this and there's a genuinely weird and truly unsettling undercurrent to the whole thing. Bang on the second track and you'll see what I mean: distorted synth (?!) tones, echoed, unintelligible samples, cut through with the odd "Erector"-style ultra high-frequency laser blast. Properly disturbing music.      In keeping with the tone of the piece, image for the front artwork taken from "Cthulu" by Austin Spare (the original of which I had the pleasure of viewing a couple of months ago in Glasgow!); wrap-around black half-sleeve, back parchment insert, fully printed CDr. 100 copies.

paper wings - ash field pseudo arcana / black petal – cd – 12.50$

Paper Wings is the electric guitar duo of Australian Anthony Guerra and New Zealander Antony Milton.
Recorded in a small room on a winters day in Sydney in 2005 Paper Wings full-length debut drifts through beautiful bowed drones, tender melodic excursions and harsher sonic adventures. Four pieces that find these two guitarists at the top of their game.
(Paper Wings previously appeared on the Last Visible Dog compilation 'Crows of the World (Volume 1)' with the track "Horse Lattitudes'.Reviews said:
".. The real reason to pick this [compilation] up, though, is to hear Paper Wings' "Horse Lattitudes", an extended twin guitar dirge layered with whispered and wailing vocals. Beginning slowly and chaotically, it unfolds into a colossal mesh of The Velvet Underground at their most primal and Earth at 16rpm. Just when it threatens to peak, the duo fall back into another bout of feedback induced guitar meltdown, wringing every amplified note out of their instruments until the bones of the piece have been picked clean"
Edwin Pouncey, The Wire
"A masterclass in free improv that is even better at ear-splitting volume"
Simon Lewis, Terrascope.

patron saints - FOHHOH BOHOB - time lag records - lp & 7"- 25$

deluxe and exact official reissue of one of the rarest & most unique gems of the 60s private press psychedelic underground. home recorded in a suburban new york living room over just a couple weeks in 1969 by three enthused teenagers, and then self released by the band in an edition of only 100 copies complete with hand assembled covers and booklet insert. dreams of rock stardom may have faded quickly, but from such humble beginnings these kids totally transcended their limited resources… an album overflowing with naive creativity, huge ideas, deep bedroom mysticism, and more then a hint of stoned teenage humor, not to mention a rather unusual assortment of instruments and some very unconventional but brilliant "studio" maneuvering. two singers/songwriters both with wonderfully deep, poetic & introspective lyrics and unique voices, chiming 12 string & electric guitars, unusually cool use of piano, crude drum kit, autoharp, banjo, tambourine, subtle bursts of fuzz bass, off kilter unison vocals, washes of reverb modulation, weird tape edits, and a seriously one-of-a-kind vibration. there's truly been nothing like it before or since… highest quality production throughout with better then ever master tape sounds and warm analog mastering, audiophile 180gm vinyl, exact reproduction of the original heavy weight cover with front & back mind-blowingly cool crude black & white art just like the original, exact reproduction of the thick insert booklet with gold printed covers on multiple colors of construction paper. plus a bonus 7inch of two essential tracks intended for the original lp but left off due to time restrictions, complete with colored construction paper picture sleeve and lyric insert. without a doubt, the definitive reissue of this lost masterpiece. released in full cooperation with founding member eric bergman. strictly limited to 1000 copies.

Yet, when they entered the corridor, there was only darkness with no hope for light. So we looked one handed with unpleasant concept for an area of permanence. Unpopular schizms supplied a flimsy insulation, and then a spark. The pursuit of construction with a deathly chill in its veins, and all will be destroyed by fire of its own dynamism. Modular constructs of raw synthesis by Jonas Asher and John McCusker

pengo - counterfeit memories - nashazphone - lp - 25$

Rochesters PENGO is John Schoen, R. Nuuja and Jason Finkbeiner. 2/3 of them have previously played with Arthur Doyle. A departure from 1970s Ugandan extravaganza into possibly the synapses of its then leader.

people’s parties -cut hands - cdr - 11$

Solo outing by Mark McGuire who, as one of the Emeralds boyz, is causing a righteous fuss in the minds of many stoned headz in the worldwide underground. People’s Parties offers 4 space huffin’ guitartrips through hostile ground, thorny fields and fuzz solo’s buried underneath thick layers of kosmische drone. The real scorcher though is the gorgeous 5th track, floating back down to earth with some of the most delicate guitarplaying I’ve heard this year, alongside melancholic spoken word samples which makes these 90 kgs al woozy and sentimental. Like watching an aged slideshow from some deceased family and feeling it, totally.

pewt'r jjjjj - byens lys 06-12-17 - there is no trouble in denmark – cd - 12.50$

he joint forces of 3/4 of local stone rock favourites causa sui (jonas (manual), jakob (syntaks), and jess), also local, high-spirited avant-gardist jørgen teller (… & the empty stairs) and loud folk classicist ron joel schneiderman (sunburned hand of the man, aethr myth’d et al) is pewt’r jjjjj.

they played a one-time-only show at the magical christiania venue byens lys 06-12-17 and, luckily, it was recorded. though, for reasons still mysterious, the soundboard recording only contained jørgen and ron’s guitars. an audience recording was done, too, which captured everything, but lacked the sound quality of a proper soundboard recording.

many a sleepless night were spent brooding over how this fine material could best be presented to the public. renowned electronica artist manual took it upon himself to tie a knot, wherein the loose ends could meet. in addition to re-editing the entire audience recording, he threw a few drones and spacey sounds that he created from playing around with the recording of ron and jørgen’s guitars into the mix. a bit of extra guitar was laid down as well. the result is an interesting combination of ‘dirty’ stereo recording and post-production. it bears some resemblance to the way miles davis made records in the early 1970s or the early grateful dead’s more acidy records.

byens lys 061217 is an imposing mixture of mind-altering, trippy, instrumental, psych, spacerock, freakout, fuzz guitar mayhem. a hawkwind circa ‘brainstorm’ groove with avant-garde overlayering á la early sunburned hand turned into an amon düül II/can krautrock kinda feel.

phoenix cube - walking the shore - barl fire - cdr - 11$

With the enviable role as the reviews editor for The Ptolemaic Terrascope online, it's not surprising that Simon Lewis aka The Phoenix Cube has spent the last few years soaking up a multitude of influences from the cream of the current psychedelic underground.  His passion for electronica, space rock and psychedelia from the likes of Gong and the Aphex Twin, that were notable on his previous albums as The Phoenix Cube and as part of his band Phorum, although evident on "Walking The Shore", this time round place the emphasis on bedroom recorded psych-folk and dronescapes.   The album features cover art by Lewis himself, is housed in vinyl slip cases, contains an insert and is limited to 100 copies.

placenta popeye - self titled - phase!– cdr – 6$

French noisestars Placenta Popeye offer 8 tracks of total demolition and breakdown overdose. Using guitars, basses and percussion in the tradition of early Neubauten, demented vox a la Whitehouse and a unique blend of all the above, bathed in fear and desperate madness.
Spraypainted xerox printing on color paper. Limited to 70 w/ numbered outers.
"Great looking Placenta Popeye release, with its coloured half-eaten xerox scrawl echoing the chaos of the music inside. The tracks here consist of neat bronchially challenged guitar action that coughs n splutters in broken lines of angular expectorant. The vox follows suit seemingly on the verge of asphyxiation, yelling its message out in a conked out pitch that sounds like the mutant offspring of Beefheart in places. Smashed and gloriously askew, like a wino support band from hell, they force their music into a space too small to contain it, the listener getting covered in the toxic overspill. I've been listening to this on my commute to Oxford, and its sonic charms have been a great in-car deterrent to road rage not to mention the classic looks I get from passers by as I'm stuck in traffic on baking hot days. plains - underground - CLaudia - 3" cdr - 10$

Plains live at the Underground Bar, Auckland, NZ, 5th June 2006.
Recorded opening a show for Birchville Cat Motel and Sam Hamilton. This was Plains last performance before Mark moved to Tokyo, and it turns out quite a bit more energetic than the first album "Into Tone" on Scarcelight. Here the improvised soundscapes are a bit more fragmented, with melodic rumbles through the background, and a surface bubbling of psychedelic noise.

Solo project of Dewey Mahood of Eternal Tapestry. "Plankton Wat is a beautiful, graceful thing of looped and picked acoustic guitar, following a wander-glimmer-drone structure that psych fans in Portland should be well aquainted with. With barely any of the cacophony or aggression Eternal Tapestry sometimes builds to...[this album] beckons us to fall back into our own head. Not the busy part–the worry and chaos cortex–but, the part that I’ve had a hell of a time finding lately, the pocket where our thoughts go when we’re perfectly happy to just drift and stare." pocahaunted / christina carter - nnf - lp -12$

Been beautifully blissed on this pairing for months now and we’re amped it’s finally public unveiling time. Christina Carter has trekked around this country (and planet) countless times in the past decade plus, both by herself and with Tom Carter in Charalambides, and the constant gypsy-drifting has weathered her song-stories down into spare, spiral reflections on life, death, and afterlife. Here she lays down four perfect vignettes of acoustic guitar pattern, softly sung desperation, and dangerous intimacy. A beatific bring-down. Sisters-with-voices Pocahaunted handle the B side wax, and their two tracks span the psych-ward spectrum from doomy warpath exile (“Sweat Lodge”) to octave-climbing estrogen ecstasy cloud-tripping (“Silk Fog Traveler”). Both were recorded by Bobb Bruno at Eagle Rock HQ across summer ’07 and cling like cotton to the memory banks. Edition of 500.

pocahaunted & robedoor - hunted gathering - digitalis - cd -20$

"Hunted Gathering" is both a split release and a collaboration. Each band offers up their own malfeasance while collaborating on the epic final eponymous track. The union of these two groups is a natural combination. Two members are married and run the Not Not Fun label together and they share amps and practice space, for example. But there's also something about both that is visceral and raw. Robedoor's subsonic doom is washed down with a smooth chaser of Pocahaunted's reverberating soul sounds.

Recorded by the inimitable Bobb Bruno at the NNF/Bored Fortress studio space across many moons in 2007 and mastered by Yellow Swans' Pete Swanson, "Hunted Gathering" is an essential feast for fans of doom-infused drones and Stevie Nicks. These hunting & gathering songs from the Eagle Rock air also feature appearances by the aforementioned Bruno as well as Changeling mastermind, Roy Tatum.

Climb the totem pole and let these mutant beasts put you under their psychosis spell. "Hunted Gathering" is full of antiquated sounds soaked in electric mud. Robedoor and Pocahaunted are your brothers and sisters in conjuring and the gatekeepers to a lost universe of sonic enchantment.

The duo of Paul Kneejie and Brian Watson are American popular musicians known collectively as The Pope. They met in elementary school in 1953, when they both appeared in the school play Alice in Wonderland (Kneejie as the Dodo, Watson as Dweedle Dum). They formed the group Tom and Jerry in 1957, and had their first taste of success with the minor hit "Hey Schoolgirl... Boogie". As The Pope, the duo rose to fame in 1965 backed by the hit single "The Sound of Silence Boogie Woogie". Their music was almost featured on the landmark film Star Wars, propelling them further into the public consciousness. They are well known for their close harmonies and sometimes unstable relationship. Their last album, Boogie Over Troubled Water, was marked with several delays caused by artistic differences. Kneejie and Watson were among the most popular recording artists of the 1960s, and are perhaps best known for their songs "The Sound of Silence Boogie", "Mrs. Robinson Boogie", "Boogie over Troubled Water" and "The Boxer Boogie". They have almost received several Grammys and are hoping to be inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2007). pukers - live in minneapolis - neon commune - nnf - cs -  7$

Iowa City-turned-LA miscreants took their sneering, conceptual punk puke (plus renegade guitarist/corn farmer Will Kapp) on the road last winter for a whirlwind pillaging of living rooms and art dives and one of the dates best caught on tape was this Minnesota gig. Chaos meets content meets a ten-man mosh pit. Future cops beware. In pirated Pukers/peace-logo silkscreened cardstock cases. Edition of 50.

pulse emitter - progression to desolation - black horizons – lp - 12$

Finally Pulse Emitter gets the treatment he deserves, a full 12" of vinyl to lay down two prog flavoured tracks of synth drone. Created using home-built synth modules, and meticulously contructed into a sci fi storyline, this could be a soundtrack. Suffocating layered heaviness, dry synth hiss, oscillator click terror meets equally with beauty, a quality rare among Pulse Emitter's peers. Each cover and insert is a unique paint marbled design, silkscreened / designed over by Nick of Seizure Palace. Edition of 300 copies on black vinyl.

pulse emitter / envenomist - split - black horizons – cass - 7$

Two side-long tracks occupy this release. Both artists here move through dark immersing synthesized environments. Pulse Emitter provides a more barren yet varied track that has movement. Also of note to fans of Daryl's "Meditative Music" release, this has similar yet more ominous tones that create a slowly moving melody. Envenomist's side hits with his longest released track, an ebbing and flowing sea of organic synth waves. J-card is a 3-panel horizontal folding affair, offset printed silver on black linen paper, clear labels. Edition of 150 on hi-bias chrome tapes.

pumice - quo - tipped bowler tapes - lp - 14$

As the title self-effacingly implies, Quo proffers a triumphant, primo slice of past Pumiceisms: uncertain progressions, anomalous structure, inimitable guitar buzz, sublime melancholy, and distorted vocals (crooned, spoken & moaned). Quo once more finds Pumice cruising the convergence of pop, folk and noise strains with bona fide inner mystique. Sputtering sub-underground skiffle aims for outer zones, diamond cuts of nervous guitar with pesky hooks that sting and tickle tread rough hewn punk turf, pop tangents charm with echoes of Kilgour or Knox, and woozy synth blurts & drones thread the patchwork patterns with Hulk-like grace. With Quo, Neville's palette has shifted to include traces of useless hardcore, doo wop, and modern loner/lunar blues.

Stefan Neville, shamblin' on unhinged like a modern day Hasil Adkins, has been making music as Pumice now for most of his life. Through a steadily spewed stream of unique DIY thud & ooze, mostly created on his insular own, Neville has burrowed an incomparable place in the post-everything New Zealand landscape, all the while making music that's his.

Cassette reissue of a cdr that come out a while back on American Grizzly, slightly re-edited for this tape version... Quetzolcoatl is the solo project of Timothy Hurley who runs the awesome Leaf Trail label, and also plays in another two great bands Bonecloud and Ixchel... Previous Quetzolcoatl releases have been on Ikuisuus and (VxPxC)'s Phanto Limb Recordings. Awesome almost tribal drone blurring almost in a kinda folk vibe... very psychedelic... and damn good! Quttinirpaaq is multi instrumentalist Texan Matt Turner, and Dragged Through The Streets sounds to me like what last years weak ass Transformers movie should have looked like... Doom ridden feedback and thundering percussion, weirdo electronics with walls of harsh feedback, screech and squelch lined crust invested sludge, bleak tribal drums with repetetive piano and metallic feedback shuffles, all across 6 tracks. Further releases will soon be seen on Ruralfaune, Reverb Worship, Epicene ESR and more!

raccoo-oo-oon - behold secret kingdom - release the bats – cd – 11$

You know what they say: beautiful tribal spirit psych lies in the eyes of the beholder. So enter the kingdom and hold the secret in your hands. Iowa City’s prodigal sun-starers offer up the fruits of their deepest inquest yet into the heart of the heart of the country. Eight wilderness rituals of swirling percussion, mossy guitar noise, forest howls, and animal instincts that unfold and erupt with more focus, intensity, and complexity than anything else in Raccoo-oo-oon’s discography thus far. The songs were tracked in the studio with warmth and power by Mike Dixon and then given a heavy mastering job by Pete Swanson, so sonically the vinyl shines and burns and explodes in all the right places. A crushing statement of electric alchemy by one of our favorite bands in the world. Black vinyl LPs in awesome pro-printed jackets, plus an insert, with Midwestern magick color visions/nature photography art by the band.

B side is blown out guitar burners giving way to dark night ride vibes. In general think about starring out of your sunglasses at the end of the world and thinking this is alright. rahdunes- alive in 07 blackest rainbow – cdr - 11$

Tumbling weirdness of noise from this San Francisco based duo of Nate Archer and Aaron Coyes. Fuzzing feedback walls of metallic drone stabbing at your ears making them bleed, and the sound of the blood trickles into the recording of these recordings or something? But in a more documentation descriptive approach, this is a bunch of live recordings from a bunch of recent shows. Fully doom drone scapes... somewhere between Black Boned Angel and Mouthus maybe? They got an LP on Emporer Jones out now, and a LP coming on Qbico in the new year along with a LP on Ecstatic Yod. Ripping stuff. 3 panel wrap around cover designed by the band. Limited to 80 copies.

ramses III – matanuska – music fellowship – cd - 12$

During the quiet nights of winter while the snow gently falls outside, the fireplace offers warmth and light. The UK's Rameses III hail from a place where subtle drifts are priceless. These insular drones are highlighted by rich acoustic depths, adding so much contrast that it's heartbreaking. Recordings of birds add a natural grace, and in the context, this trio is freed. Within these digital walls rises something majestic, extracted from the soil. With their latest full-length release, Rameses III build upon their burgeoning reputation as architects of some of the most beautifully striking soundscapes around. Matanuska invites metaphor, conjures atmosphere and envelopes the listener in its shroud. Glistening waves of string and keyboard hum and shimmer to create wondrous ambient sculptures that eventually find release in a blossom of bucolic folk. Matanuska will appeal to fans of Stars Of The Lid, Eyvind Kang, Brian Eno, Thomas Koner and Richard Youngs.

With previous releases on Ruralfaune and his own Vilaaaviivivi imprint, Tosittiti has mapped a space of eternal-drone now sound channeled through a roomful of instruments and old tape decks. Balthar’s two side-long tracks of blissful whirring and buried, distant percussion catch the Reggaee at his best. The A-side is lodged inside a dream of vocal clouds and scattered bells, with the nocturnal kicking of the dreamer audible in the fog. The B-side ebbs to nightmare, ending in bleak tonal decay. Full-color cardstock covers with two inserts and sprayed tapes." Edition of 68.

Reynolds and John W. Fail collated several recordings to compile Uncabineted, covering the period between September 2005 (when they met) and March 2006. Reynolds work is well-documented on labels such as Ikuisuss, Memoirs of an Aesthete, Time-Lag and 267 Lattajjaa while Fail has dabbled in myriad projects including Lied Music, Intro to Pterodactyl and Land. Ranging from screaming acoustics to dirgy fuzzfests, the real document is that of experience, joy and camaraderie.

robedoor – shapeshifter slave – oesb - lp - 15$

Shapeshifters are messengers and imitators of the gods. Shapeshifters can be divine or
human. Crossing boundaries between sacred and evil, they often bring messages, power or
punishment from the gods. Shapeshifting is used to gain access to the tower.

They are able to turn any situation around. Nothing is too much or too little. The shapeshifter
can invert a life-threatening situation into one where he triumphs. This form of shapeshifting
is most commonly painless but can be traumatic if the change was unintentional; clothing is
rarely lost in this process.

Edited, assembled, and mastered with assistance from Pete Swanson of the Yellow Swans.
Ectoplasmic cover art conjured by France's Parisse Bruno. Pro-printed black and white
covers and insert. Limited edition of 425 copies.

robedoor - shrine to the possessor - music fellowship - lp - 14$

New batch of brutal minimalism from Robedoor on their first vinyl full length, Shrine to the Possessor. This one is pure darkness - no light, no air, just tortured souls and echoed cries. Three epic droning processionals built from the heaviest, thickest low-end tones. The sound of indentured servants from a scorched dustbowl wasteland. Caveman aesthetic pushed to its limits by recording to eight analog channels.

Robedoor's storied back catalog includes full length CDs on Release the Bats and Interregnum, collaborative albums with their sisters-in-arms Pocahaunted on Digitalis, Ecstatic Peace, and Blackest Rainbow, and countless other long sold-out CDRs and tapes, several on the band's own label, the undeniably prodigious Not Not Fun, as well as on Ruralfaune, Chocolate Monk, Chondritic Sound, and many others.

Recorded by Bobb Bruno at Bored Fortress HQ in Eagle Rock, CA. Artwork by Andy Spore. Includes silkscreened 11x17 poster. Limited and numbered to 500.

robedoor & pocahaunted - hunted gathering - digitalis - cd -20$

Robedoor and Pocahaunted are your brothers and sisters in conjuring and the gatekeepers to a lost universe of sonic enchantment.

robert stillman's horses - three early maine films - l'animaux tryst recordings – cdr & dvdr - 12$

in which nostalgia is gleaned from the parlour and the ocean; the fairground and the midnight air, in the form of moving postcards and one-man piano rags. using just two hands and two feet to play electric piano, a complete drumkit, nylon-stringed guitar, and tape fragments as though he were a full whiskey-soaked turn-of-the-20th-century band, robert stillman's music is transportive and transformative in any setting, but perhaps most effective as presented here: as the thoughtful soundtrack to archival silent documentary film footage of early 1900's maine loggers, fishermen, and lobstermen. the films and musical accompaniment are suspenseful, reverent, and playful - stillman's score perfectly matching the documentation of maine worklives with a veritable documentary of the american parlour sound.

rst - axes - last visible dog – cd – 10$

"From the vantage of 2007 it is easy to forget the conceptual and aesthetic leap represented by the work of rst. I was amazed when I heard his first lathe-cut LP Event Horizon in early 1995, because there was really nothing like it before.
While clearly responding to the same imperatives as the nearly-contemporary Surface of the Earth, his sound effectively came out of nowhere. Indeed, at that point, one of the few things I’d heard operating in the same area was Earth itself. While now the plague of black metallers and second-rate ‘drone-istas’ have made this seem like a starting-point obvious to the point of being passé, 12 years ago that was far from true.
So it’s easy now to listen to the new rst album, his third in the last decade after releases on Ecstatic Peace! and Corpus Hermeticum, and think – I’ve heard that before. But in fact, all you’ve heard is everyone who copped this shit from the originators. This immaculate blend of scrubbed and polished metallic tones, layered and sculpted like automotive bodywork of the first order, is in fact the real deal. rst had this first, and remains best at doing it, because he’s kept his head down, kept off bad drugs, and continued to refine his work in relative obscurity – not caring    whether or not you know about it.
It’s hard not to lose yourself in this because for me it sounds like the operation of the cosmos, amplified to audibility. This is electric guitar sound with all the extraneous ‘music’ stripped out. Electricity in action: natural like electro-magnetism, and devotional like the wind from the sun."
