woods - how to survive in + in the woods - shrimper - lp - 12$
The Woods' 2005 debut, initially issued as a double-cassette on the Fuckittapes label, was recorded in two bedrooms with no intention of being shared with the outside world. How To Survive In / In The Woods finds the Woods family at their most stripped-down and primitive. Thirteen cuts of home-cooked measles and grout gingerly pulled out of the spleen of a tape deck are now reissued on the popular LP and CD formats. The Woods are in the midst of touring and recording a follow-up long player due out in 2008. Check out their almost fully baked humble beginnings on this much sought-after reissue.
"...a combination of campfire folk and strange assembly techniques that should make mouth-breathers everywhere tingle with desire. Indeed, there is much to like about the way these guys play by the numbers, then fall apart and reassemble themselves in different guises. Gotta say, the new folk reaction to noise is pretty damn dandy."

black eagle child / sean mccann - cambrian members - self released -7$
"I fell asleep late last night right after I jammed this latest burner from Sean McCann and Black Eagle Child. That was lucky, let me tell ya... this split is a total tropical dreamscreamer. Each one of them gets a side, but it doesn't matter - the message is the same: it's time to zone the fuck out.. Crisp capricorn tones drizzle down like pink sunkissed mists from the heavens, totally enveloping your aural sensibilities. Guitar zoners and gooey, synthed up flow-ers take you through the perfect lazy river, floating on scarlet sonic waves to the stars. This is the new space race. If all drones were drenched in this much bliss, we'd all be rotten to the core."

inca ore and grouper - split - self released - lp - 20$
Split record between Oakland's Inca Ore (Eva Saelens of Alarmist, Jackie-O Motherfucker) and Portland's Grouper (Liz Harris of Grouper, Krueger, Badgerlore). This split was a collaboration put together during the late winter of 2007 while both were living in Portland. Eva's material was made in Morelia, Mexico during and inspired by a journey through that part of the world earlier that same winter. Her side is a return to Eva performing solo, lonely and haunting. The sounds of feeling tried, and of exploring some dark realm of the spirit are apparent, and quite beautiful to listen to. A chorus of distorted cave-bound vocals, melodies that soar upwards and float back down into horror film loops. Grouper's side finds a return to the Wurlitzer keyboard, fragmented and layered. Songs separate and return to meet in uprooted refrains, at once disarming and soothing. Similar sense of some grey kind of journey rooted in both physical and ethereal worlds. Self-released by Eva and Liz.

emanations from under the door hit the maid like a sack of wet hammers.
"This hotel must be on fire, with the souls of a million dead cats screaming in slo-mo..."
She slammed open the door, and readied her broom to ward off the devils making this racket...
but all she found inside were emptied suitcases, overpriced beer in cans, and three bedraggled men
babysitting a small angel. They were lulling her to sleep with the most disturbing of sounds, but it all
seemed so right...
This is what was heard under the door...

kinit her - as magi - living tapes - cass - 8$sold out
Grown men imitating cats probably sounds like a terrible idea for a powerful rock band. Well, Kinit Her are here to defy the odds. Falsetto has a beautifully place in rock history. Just ask Elton John. Now here is the post-Joanna Newsom version. Although that reference will lead you completely astray, as this music is filled with precise and driving guitar leads, triumphant war-melodies, and a new age afterglow that is all sci-fi and no fantasy. Rarely does something so well formed breathe its first life on cassette. 'As Magi' is one of those albums you can recommend to everybody. Gentle in the right places, diabolical beneath it all, and so well crafted an executed that neither passion nor form is ever sacrificed. If the live show is even half as good as this, then this is the 8,000,000th coming of Christ. Get this.

dania shapes - soundsystem pastoral - naivsuper - cdr - 10$ sold out
Dania Shapes is Daniel Lopatin, who began recording ambient compositions in his bedroom while studying aesthetic philosophy and experimental music at Hampshire College (USA). Soundsystem Pastoral was recorded during the winter of 2004 / 05 using synthesizers, a first generation digital sequencer, and a freeware sound editor. It was remixed in 2006 for this release on naivsuper. Working with handheld tape recorders, retro synthesizers, and a personal computer, Lopatin creates conceptual systems and processes to create music that's beautiful and inventive, with interesting textures and unexpected sonic interventions. The sounds have a lush, ambient quality, but an edge as well. The pieces are formally well-conceived oscillating between easiness and strictness. The music is clearly indebted to heroes of electronica such as Christian Fennesz, William Basinski, and Brian Eno; and it has links to classic experimentalists such as David Tudor and David Behrman. Yet Lopatin maintains a more song-based musical position that results in an accessible product that will attract fans of ambient, post-rock, and experimental music

dania shapes - holograd - paper cities - cdr - 8$ sold out
Dania Shapes is Daniel Lopatin (also of ASTRONAUT, ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, INFINITY WINDOW), who began recording ambient compositions in his bedroom while studying aesthetic philosophy and experimental music at Hampshire College (USA). As a child, Lopatin had studied piano under the training of his mother, but he was a whimsical young boy and didn't have the requisite precociousness that classical training required of him. Thus, he turned to his father's old Roland Juno-60 synthesizer. He quickly learned a thing or two about the extreme drama of the mod wheel, erased all of his father's organ presets in favor of toneless noise, and the rest is history.
Holograd is the 2nd full-length from Dania Shapes. Warm analog sounds and free-floating pixelated structures meet the cold reality of todays world and defy them with their otherworldly beauty. Thin, lacy tones decorating deep undercurrents, we're proud to bring this to the people. 100 copies in hand-screened jackets.

dark dark dark - the snow magic -supply and demand - cd - 10$ sold out
It's Dark Dark Dark's first full-length release, and they've let their imaginations run wild! One frigid midwinter not very long ago, DDD found themselves spending a couple of weeks in a cozy Minneapolis house with a few nifty instruments, a brilliant drummer (Martin Dosh), and a talented recording guru / baker of delicious vegan cookies (Robert Skoro). That is basically how the Snow Magic happened.
Along the way, everyone played xylophone and made up new vocal harmonies. Nona rearranged some songs on Rob's beautiful dusty old piano and Marty played some drumbeats that shook the floors. The result is perhaps the most hopeful and romantic collection of songs you'll ever hear about death, lost love, despair, decaying corpses, and the harsh Minnesota winter.
The CD's packaging includes an 8 page booklet of photographs by Timothy G. Piotrowski -- glimpses of those ghost monuments to wildness that everyone peers at through the glass on a Sunday at the museum...

steven r smith - cities - immune - lp - 15$ sold out
"American multi-instrumentalist Steven R. Smith has been releasing a steady stream of solo records for well over a decade as well as playing in various improvisational groups including Thuja, Hala Strana, and most recently Ulaan Khol. This music has ranged from sparse solo guitar improvisations to Hala Strana's reworkings of Eastern European traditional folk tunes to the dense, psychedelic fuzz guitar workouts of Ulaan Khol. On his latest full-length solo release, Cities, Smith combines the composed with the improvisational and the result is a beautiful and desolate collection of songs evoking a crumbling landscape reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road or the films of Hungarian director Béla Tarr. Cities was recorded in Smith's Worstward Studios on all analog equipment and features a wide variety of instrumentation including fretted spike fiddle, baritone psaltery, electric and nylon stringed guitars, cello, melodica, electric piano and organ. Musically, Smith's work over the years could be summed up as a struggle to contain a series of opposites: light and darkness, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. It is this balance, or at least the effort to create or maintain this balance, that informs Cities as well. Smith has recorded for numerous labels including Important Records, Catsup Plate, Soft Abuse, Emperor Jones, Last Visible Dog, Jewelled Antler, Digitalis and Darla. Cities is his first release for Immune Recordings."

AREA C: In live collaboration with Black Forest/Black Sea, Eyes Like Saucers and Mudboy
Full length double cd release limited to 500 copies housed in a uniquely designed handmade letterpress sleeve by western MA artist Amy Borezo at her Shelter Bookworks studio.
We have been fans and have closely followed Providence’s AREA C project for several years. It was simply a matter of time before we would release something by this dynamic artist and these special recordings presented themselves as the obvious choice. AREA C’S work has always appealed in its ability to be at once hypnotically accessible balanced by subtle and brooding dark elements under the surface. It recalls both post-rock elements as well as the more experimental works of classic 70’s German space rock groups. The live collaborations with the other Providence based artists push AREA C's distinctive sound in compelling directions. This document represents over two hours of carefully selected music taken from many evenings of performances.

spiral joy band - pleasure is the headlight - uzu - 2xlp - 25$
Featuring two members of the most excellent Pelt, the Spiral Joy Band swells forth from Blacksburg, Virginia, with a follow up to their album "Wake of the Dying Sun King" on VHF Records. This double LP set features recordings from two eras of the Spiral Joy Band. The first is from 2005, the second 2007. A cacophony of gongs, bowls, bells, chimes, electronics, fiddle, bowed cymbals, esraj, harmonium, srutiand electronics played by Mikel Dimmik, Michael Gangloff, Amy Shea and Nathan Bowles, along with a guest or two, here and there. "Pleasure Is The Headlight" features 5 tracks in total spread over 4 sides. The first three being long trance inducing meditations recorded in Blacksburg and Ironto. The fourth side features unique recordings, the first is a solo wind chime performance recorded in a gift shop, featuring the murmur of confused patrons and what is likely some truly wonderful AM radio piped in over the store's stereo system. The second track is a slow hazy day at the beach, with gongs, seagulls, and the gentle roar of the ocean. Pressed on 180 gram black vinyl and limited to about 400 copies, this album comes in a custom gatefold jacket with letter pressed cover art and silk screened inside art. The first 70 copies will be available in a variant cover featuring the same art as the regular version, but a different combination of paper and ink.

burning star core - challenger - plastic records - lp - 17$
"While the Burning Star Core project has included much wider ensembles, Challenger is a direct solo composition of C. Spencer Yeh. This recording is perhaps Yeh's most revealing, unguarded work. Challenger is a composed work, not an improvisation, with each piece revolving around a central melodic theme, featuring field recordings, which serve as an audio diary. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in then drop out to build up the emotion. When the piano sound crashes in 'Mysteries of the Organ,' it reflects a frustration with paradise, a rejection of perfection, a jolt of inexplicable throes of life. In contrast is the quiet, haunting 'Hopelessly Devoted,' which sounds like a love letter written to outer space. These make for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement."

Long-, long-, long-, loooooong-awaited and singular entry in the Charalambides and Klang Industries discographies; one of those "does it really exist?" items that's finally seeing daylight, or moonlight. astro / family battle snake split - pan / hanido sounds - lp -27$ sold out
"Delving into the realm of deep listening, transported by way of analog synthesizers, Family Battle Snake weaves an electronic web that cocoons the listener in warm cascading frequencies. Calls to mind classic electronic composers such as Charles Dodge, Charles Wourinen and even a hint of NWW. Family Battle Snake is Bill Kouligas, a London-based Greek who also performs and records with Sudden Infant.
Astro is Hiroshi Hasegawa of the legendary and now defunct Japanese noise unit C.C.C.C. Sonic waves of squealing feedback and oscillating waveforms meld with biting distortion in the appropriately titled “Lunatic Luminescence”. Enveloped by haywire electronics and burbling loops & skree, Astro has constructed an impressive piece of modern electronic music of devastating magnitude.
A fine document of pure Japanese sonic nihilism and fresh deconstucted electronic frequencies.
The LP is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker in a limited edition of 330 hand-numbered copies, pressed on 140g vinyl and comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve. It is packaged in a pro-press jacket which itself is housed in a two-tone silk screened pvc sleeve with interweaving geometric designs."

black eagle child / the pistil cosmos - the dew on equinox - self released - cass - –7$ sold out
This tape arrives just in time for Fall. It's a tribute, in a way, to the time of year in which the stifling dampness and heat are succeeded by a crispness. Migratory birds begin to descend upon an equatorial destination. All that moisture that used to haunt you throughout the day is now only ever present in the earliest parts of the day. The Black Eagle Child side of this split is a nod toward the nostalgic part of Fall--romps through cemeteries and old suburban neighborhoods on leafy nights, the wind through a dry air, and the sound of the Earth preparing for a great cooling off. On the other side, The Pistil Cosmos explores this season with a more spiritual tone (albeit, these spirits are often grim ones). Hear the sounds of Kluskap and Malsum dancing a balance between beauty and utter annihilation. Good prevails of course, but first you must endure the darkness! This is a tape of folk music and crushing, ominous tones. Limited to 48 copies, high-bias tapes housed in machine-sewn cotton & wool-felt sleeves, with hand-numbered inserts featuring a drawing of our favorite animal of the north.

skaters - dispersed royalty ornaments-wabana – lp – 21$ sold out
As the duo known as the Skaters and as solo artists, Ferraro and Clark, who are flat broke and currently without phone or Internet service, spend most of their days and late nights not working but huddled in their bedrooms jamming, obsessively exploring through the use of nontraditional instrumentation and the creation of abstract sound 'the inside and the outside at the same time,' and in the process experiencing what Ferraro calls 'private imaginations.' The end result is not what you would expect -- i.e., a pretentious, painfully dry avant-garde free-noise. Quite the opposite, it's a totally out there, vocal-dominated psychedelia, based, structurally speaking, on the open-ended drone heard in industrial music, minimalism, experimental electronics, folk, world music, and free jazz. And, like the best free jazz -- the early, fiery stuff: Trane, Ayler, Sanders -- the Skaters' noise-drenched cosmic soul is driven by their need to, in the words of Ferraro, 'grasp something that is beyond what you can verbalize. Justin Farrar.

So this was bound to happen sooner or later: when I first met Dennis and the Krokodilleland dudes at the Extra-Sucky event in Antwerp, I was really happy and psyched to see dudes my age digging and making sounds just for the joy and pleasure of it. So yeah, Dennis Krokodil put out a great cd-r of his solo stuff shortly after, and seeing as we were both playing on the (K-RAA-K)³ Festival 2007, we just thought it would be the right moment to do a first split cd-r to celebrate! sweet vinyl debut from the mighty fine death chants, releases on the band’Äôs own new label. if you tuned into any of their great self released cassettes, or either of the time-lag cdrs, you pretty much know the deal. in a pretty mellow smoked-out drift mode here, the a side is sunny strummed acoustic guitar mantra with bubbling modular synth bleeps, distant buzzes & drones, occasional noisy bursts and half slurred wordless vocal. the b side is less songy with sweet drifting keys, thick viola drones, ebow guitar hum and an ultra peaceful ambiance very sweet stuff. perfect baked summer evening porch music. heavy moss colored art board covers, with black offset printed art by nemo. limited / numbered edition of only 320 copies.

wasteland jazz unit / concrete arteries - split - community college - cass - 5$ sold out
During December of 1979 in Cincinnati, eleven people were killed in a mass panic prior to seeing The Who at the Coliseum. Twenty-eight years later, Wasteland Jazz Unit resurrect that trepidation with scathing, soaked and blistering free-jazz aural assaults. Mutilating ear drums and minds alike.
Side B finds Concrete Arteries (Jon Lockhart [ex-To-Night Golden Curls, Kvlt Of Unicron]) violating listeners with his hazed creeper jams. Savage vocals from the Gem City. Dying beats drowning in the ghosts of the 1913 flood, this is the Dayton sound you've been warned about.

heavy eye of the sun - I - self released - cdr - $8sold out
heavy eye of the sun - II - self released - cdr - $8sold out
The name Heavy Eye of the Sun inspires vivid imagery. I imagine Mayan temples erected toward the sun-borne gods, and ancient ritualistic dances performed in the fire light by feather-adorned priestesses. It's one hell of a name that insinuates something monolithic, something great. So it takes some guts to name your band that. Thankfully on Heavy Eye of the Sun's latest album (and their debut before this, quite honestly), they certainly live up to these lofty expectations.
Housed in a beautiful collage by the artist & photographer, Maryse Latulippe, "II" is the aural equivalent of a sacred talisman. It is enchanted with mystic spirits. This Montreal duo, comprised of Olivier Borzeix and James Schidlowsky, at times remind me of a more acoustic-based, freer version of The Skaters. Their voices bounce off each other like trees spiralling toward the sky. The opening track, "Comme les ailes des libellules," is an absolute mind-bender. Dueling, rapid-fire acoustic guitars destroy everything in front of them so that Borzeix and Schidlowky's voices can rise above the ether. It's perfectly executed and totally great.
After following a similar track on the second track, the duo unleash some absolutely hypnotic folk goodness on "Shivers." Their voices, again, are the key here. High-pitched wails sound as if they're conjuring the essence of long-dead gods. "Shivers" is thick with layers of acoustic guitars, like a neverending cosmic thicket. Hints of banjo rise from the haze to show you the path home. This is truly brilliant stuff.
"II" ends with the loose-blues of "Sun Spiralling Down." It's far more meditative than its three brethren, but is the perfect end to an excellent album. "II" is full of beautiful acoustic drones, steeped in decaying leaves adn wrapped in walls of sonic ivy. It is masterfully organic in all the right places. "II" carefully carves out a niche like an archaic stream slowly etching its way toward bedroock. This is Heavy Eye of the Sun's journey to the sea. Recommended.- Brad Rose -foxy digitalis

Axolotl / D Yellow Swans / Gerritt - root strata – lp – 14$ sold out
Originally released in 2005 as a limited edition CD-R on Yellow Swans' JYRK label, this three-way collab now gets a proper run on wax. Recorded in Oakland at the Huffin House before the Swans made the retreat back to Portland. Despite the weight of these players when they rock alone, this jam really never gets into full on white out territory. Instead, it's loaded to the brim with wavy neon distortion and soothing low end that occasional drops out into huge washes of emptiness. The opening passage of GMS guitar flecks sympathizing with Karl's string wash is alone worth the price of admission. Red vinyl with lime green splatter.

There is an after-the-fact. There is a time when the sinner, pulled from his excited frame reflects on his sin. As he runs, his adrenalin dissolves and panic and fear ensue. His skin blisters and bursts, like gurgling bubbles of distortion and his feet callous and crack like hissing waves of shattering feedback. Even more repulsive are the undulations of remorse that form an undercurrent, a wash of pulsing despair. This throb retracts from the sinner’s will to escape both prosecution and his own resignation and inevitably send him staggering downward in a jolting, yet consistent dance of decay. Such is the quality of Robedoor’s aural explorations. The sounds neither brandish terror nor reflect innocent despair, but dig deeper, unearthing a frontier where the bad fear worse. Where sinners hopelessly decline.

mv & ee with the golden road - drone trailer - dicristina - lp - 14$ sold out
orbiting the earth in vermont is matt "mv" valentine, once the brawn of the tower recordings, and erika "ee" elder, ceo of heroine celestial agriculture and the mv & ee medicine show. together with their dog zuma, they run the child of microtones library of exploratory music--sometimes their own lunar blues, sometimes finger-picking-style noise/space, sometimes lonesome frontier folk. mv & ee have landed at the dicristina building bearing drone trailer, featuring the golden road: doc dunn (pedal steel, guitar, harmony), mike smith (bass, fender rhodes, harmony), and james anderson (drums, engineer). you may recognize these names as part of mv & ee's touring band when they scorched across new england and the rust belt en route to terrastock this past june. drone trailer is a consolidation of the previous musical high-life of the duo's space shanties for the 21st century. in other words, mv & ee explore their unique mix of lunar raga and astral string band music, with a couple deep-space burners/covert jams such as opening blast "anyway" thrown in to bust it all open. nobody is gonna mind if they hear a little crazy horse and prime-era dead here as well! previous releases on their own child of microtones label, along with notable albums on time-lag and ecstatic peace.
