I know little to nothing about Barn Owl except that I like their name. This 3" CD-R EP is the first I've ever heard of them. This is some crazy, disjointed stuff. It's noisy and abrasive. Loaded down with heavy percussive blasts, Barn Owl is also heavy on bass splurging. In between all the record, there's all sorts of spazzed bass noodling. It's like autistic music or something. But it's also fantastic. There's all sorts of cut-up and manipulated electronic and synthesized sounds mixed in with the drums and bass. It's disorienting at times, like being totally smashed and hanging your head over the toilet waiting to puke. In fact, I wouldn't advise listening to this when you're drunk b/c it'll make the room spin. All of these tracks work in conjunction to give you one fucked-up listening experience that flows together. I still don't know dick about Barn Owl, but I get the feeling they're a great live band and are someone I wanna hear more of. Oh, and it comes in an a-typically normal sleeve (something I don't ever expect from Imvated).- Brad Rose

Repress. "The 1978 release of Corwood Industries #0739, Ready For The House, began one of the most compelling, disturbed, and singular legacies in musical history. In the 30 years since this unique debut, Jandek has released 53 albums of mournful, atonal music that continues to defy classification and accessibility. And while the past three decades of intense productivity have yielded a depth of discussion, a handful of legendary live performances and even a film documentary, no amount of time or experience can prepare a listener for the experience of Ready For The House. Beyond stark, beyond oblique, beyond outsider, the first Jandek LP (originally credited to The Units) explores musical territories no one even knew existed, with just a hollowed-out voice and a lonely, detuned guitar. In 1985, it had infamously sold less than ten of the 1000 copies originally pressed, however by 1999, when it was issued on CD, the vinyl had completely disappeared, with original copies changing hands for hundreds of dollars. This CD is a compilation of Psychic Ills’ first two releases, Mental Violence I and Mental Violence II. Both were only issued on vinyl in very scant numbers and disappeared in the blink of an eye, that is until now. Mental Violence I was issued in 2003 in an edition of 600 copies as a black and white hand number 7”. It captures the band in it’s prototype stage. At this point they were a two-piece with Tom Gluibizzi & Tres Warren playing everything and relying on synths and overdubbing to achieve the polyphonic madness that the band has become known for. Byron Coley called it a “young sound” and he hit the mark; the two tracks teem with energy and feel as if they could skip out of orbit at any moment.

gown (aka andrew macgregor and otherwise known as one-half of the bark haze with thurston moore) moved from western wassachusetts to nova scotia in mid-2007. before he moved, he wanted to have one big audio blow-out to remember the grand old mass times. with that goal in mind, gown went into the studio with the sunburned hand of the man gang (represented this time out by john moloney, sarah o'shea, ron schneiderman and taylor richardson) to melt some audio consoles. for the maples represents a portion of that recorded output and believe us, it's some massive stuff. sunburned's thick funk presents the perfect background for gown's shredding guitar-play. extremely hot stuff, especially the massive side-long "bending close." click here for a downloadable preview, "taylor's jam."
as per the three lobed standard, for the maples is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl. it is housed within silkscreened jackets (screen work by alan sherry / SIWA) bearing new artwork by gown. the record is from an edition of 698 copies and, and as an added convenience for our vinyl friends, will come packaged with a glass-mastered CD (not CD-R) of the material present on the wax.

Brisbane avant-blues practitioners The Lost Domain have been stalwarts of the Australian underground for nearly 20 years. Formed around the core duo of guitarist David MacKinnon and organist/vocalist Simon Ellaby they have released a consistently inspiring but all too rare trickle of cdr's and have only recently begun to get the attention that they deserve (via the "Sailor Home From the Sea" CD (Broken Face/Digitalis 2004 (who incidentally promise a follow up "White Man at the Door" later this year)), and some choice compilation slots and magazine interviews).
One of the most intense and engaging live bands I have ever seen their sound is something like a gritty cross between the spacious psychedelic ambient improv noise of New Zealand's Sandoz Lab Technicians, and the weirder swampier blues-stomp of Captain Beefheart.
'Palace' presents a remarkably restrained series of subtle movements and moods that were recorded over a few weekends in the ballroom of 'The Pink Palace', an old and virtually abandoned hall in Brisbane. This is The Lost Domain in full band mode with a line up that includes Leighton Craig, Eugene Carchesio and Rick Neville. Organs and plaintive feedbacking guitars call to each other through the reverberant emptiness. There are dream like peaks and lulls as the dynamic slowly intensifies into a deep deep blues howl before the whole band once more drifts away into the ether.

Shackamaxon began back in 2001 when members of Double Leopards, Son of Earth and Magik Markers united to record and create music together. Since that time, the ensemble has quietly unleashed their psychedelic drift through a handful of live performances and a self-released CDr. Their self-titled debut LP presents four pieces of restrained beauty that encapsulates the Shackamaxon sound. The album begins with a side-long excursion where sparse organic textures become enveloped in cavernous layers of sound and perpetually fuzzed drones. It is a steady swell which builds to immense heights before fading into the expanse. Side two starts off with a brief introduction of fluttering tones, then diverges into an intricate passage of controlled feedback chatter and subtle reverberations. The album concludes with what sounds like a field recording from an alien rain forest, capturing strange creatures chirping and gurgling as the humidity drips from the canopy. Two sidelong instrumental jams make up this limited edition (300) recording
of a rare live Salamander performance from May 20 of this year. The first, "A Thirsty End," begins like a Grateful Dead tuning session—the band doesn't seem quite sure what song to play, but soon Dave Onnen's throbbing bass picks out a groove and the twin drumming of Bryce Kastning and Matt Zaun fill in the gaps, allowing guitarists Sean Connaughty and (moonlighting from Skye Klad) Erik Wivinus (doesn't he ever sleep?) to weave their magic with a vibe that is closer to the heavy grooves on their Camera Obscura "Red" albums ("Mantra" and "Ampersand") than the more recent 2xLP Birds of Appetite. The tension eases somewhat towards the end when this listener had the sense that the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders.
The 15-minute "Trench of Fire" on the flip finds us in a wind tunnel with Erik's vibrating baritone guitar bouncing notes off the wall with the resulting distorted feedback crescendoing like tentacles of flame reaching out of the titular pit. Then it's Sean's turn to run swirling loop-de-loops up and down the guitar neck and all around the resulting maelstrom. About halfway through, over a throbbing Sabbath-on quaaludes stomp, Wivinus and Connaughty's guitars become flamethrowers spewing sparks at each other, into the audience, through your speakers, and into your face. I'm sure there are easier ways to get a tan, but they ain't half as fun. If long, psychedelic, improvisational guitar duels are your thing, Live at Soo Gallery should be also. (fakejazz)

the sneak-up-on-you drony side. Hell, they might've been playing part of this album through the P.A. during their oft-devastating 'last piece'. It's a drone, but it ain't necessarily pretty, and it gets much louder than you think it's gonna, and maybe this should only be heard through huge P.A.'s or on headphones. When it's loud, you have the opportunity to get lost in it, but played softly, you're probably just gonna ignore it. . A great soundtrack when heavy gray clouds are moving by quickly above endless row-houses while city people scurry around intersections.
